What role does skilled trades play in the post-industrial age? Can they remain an economically viable model in the face of increasing digitalization in all areas of life?
A new generation of producing designers is seizing the opportunity to bring tradition and modernity together: They are implementing approaches from research and science in their craft practice and proving that creative craftsmanship can connect with the contemporary world of life and work.
Craft-based Design, in a cross-generational dialogue, portrays selected creative craftspeople who, with diverse educational backgrounds, combine design, technology, and production, and skillfully leverage international experience to develop self-determined and economically successful business models in small-scale structures. Images of the work and workshops, as well as personal knowledge dialogues with the participants, provide impressive insights into contemporary craftsmanship and establish it as a distinct position of the 21st century.
