On the occasion of the 14th International Architecture Biennale in Venice in 2014, Edith Hemmrich, Mark Blaschitz, and Jan Wurm presented the world's first building with a bioreactor façade made of algae in their book "The Algae House ." Along with three other "Smart Material Houses," the prototype designed by SPLITTERWERK and ARUP is part of the International Building Exhibition (IBA) in Hamburg. Microalgae are cultivated in glass photobioreactors, which are used to generate energy and can also control light and shadows. With the innovative floor plan typologies of the Hamburg and Milan apartments, this "Case Study House" offers a contemporary refinement to concepts pioneered by Frank Lloyd Wright (open floor plan), Adolf Loos (Raumplan), and Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky (Frankfurt kitchen). The publication, supplemented with current essays, contains initial sketches, floor plans, cross-sections, and detailed drawings, as well as a photo essay by Austrian architectural photographer Paul Ott.
