_Investigating how digital writing is changing our communication
_Focus on imagery and thus the form of the emojis
_Practice-oriented analysis model based on case studies
_Close interweaving of creative and scientific reflection

Emojis have become an integral part of our everyday lives. They have become an integral part of global digital communication. These qualitatively and quantitatively increasingly complex companions to written language have long since broken away from the written media. The omnipresence of this expanded means of expression and the resulting shift in communication are perceived quite ambivalently.

The aim of this publication is to shed light on the emergence of emojis and the intentions of users in using them, beginning with the question of what is novel about them and what role the aesthetics and imagery of the symbols play in a communication process involving emojis. This three-part interdisciplinary study encompasses the historical development, semiotic foundation, and analysis of emojis, and its multidimensional examination demonstrates the increasing relevance of form to the content-related communication of the symbols.
