    Müller-Brockmann's publication, first published in 1961, was intended to solve the problems of contemporary form-finding for the graphic artist and became a standard work that still serves as a historical guide far beyond Switzerland's borders. In 1983, an abridged, paperback version – simultaneously published in the USA and Canada – was distributed worldwide. This book is the unabridged reconstruction of the 1961 original, in a cloth binding with a jacket. The additions that Josef Müller-Brockmann himself made for the 1983 paperback version have been incorporated. Thus, the comprehensive Müller-Brockmann is now available again.
    The first part explores the path from illustrative to objective graphics, the significance of design elements, their application, and their impact in all areas of advertising: business stationery, advertisements, brochures, catalogs, books, posters, outdoor advertising, and exhibitions. The middle part of the book covers fundamental considerations of the work of the graphic designer. The chapter "Science and Visual Communication," for example, touches on topics such as semiotics, communication research, and information theory. The final third, based on comprehensive documentation, presents the systematic training of the graphic designer as taught by Müller-Brockmann at the Zurich School of Design during his time.
