In the decades between the beginning of lucrative oil exports in the late 1940s, political autonomy in 1961, and military occupation in the late 1980s, the ancient coastal city of Kuwait underwent profound economic and social changes that significantly shaped architecture and urban planning. In a climate of prosperity and independence, foreign and domestic planners were granted extensive creative freedom to explore new paths and virtually reinvent the city-state of Kuwait. As a result, remarkable buildings of late modernism were created during these 40 years.
This publication is the result of several years of intensive interdisciplinary research by renowned experts. 150 exemplary buildings of very different typologies were selected. To convey the specific building culture dynamics and the particular architectural quality of each, they are described expertly and in detail, documented visually using plans and illustrations, and placed in their respective urban structural context.
