Monospaced fonts originate from the typewriter and are characterized by the unique feature of having the same width for all letters, numbers, and characters. "Mono is the new Black" addresses the function and aesthetics of this unique typeface and explores its cult status in the (especially) young design scene. The aim of the handbook is to inform and inspire typographers, type developers, designers, and those interested in culture with facts, analyses, expert opinions, and practical examples, as well as a comprehensive collection of fonts. Beginning with a cultural-historical overview, the author explores the historical aspects of typefaces and highlights how closely intertwined typefaces, technological progress, and social development are. Selected work examples, designers, and agencies from around the world form the middle section, with a focus on the diverse possible applications. The final section is a font compendium that clearly compiles 175 monospaced fonts, highlighting the transformation this distinctive typeface has undergone, from machine script to entirely digitally developed coding fonts.
