The ever-growing enthusiasm for the creative possibilities and sensory aspects of DIY significantly shapes contemporary design through its fusion of production and consumption. As a broad phenomenon, DIY and prosumer culture are a highly contradictory phenomenon: While on the one hand, liberation from consumer constraints, dogmas of taste, and design norms is promised, at the same time, new technologies, production methods, and distribution strategies are being tested for their market compatibility.
This publication—whose title refers to the legendary "Nomadic Furniture" manuals of the 1970s—is the first to showcase the development of DIY furniture construction and offers numerous historical and current construction instructions, addressed in a design-historical and sociocultural context: Where does the DIY movement originate?
