With his designs, East German engineer Ulrich Müther wrote an important chapter in the European history of shell construction. In 1963, with the implementation of his diploma project, he constructed the first concrete shell in the former GDR. Many more milestones followed in the more than 30 years of his career. Ulrich Müther realized his groundbreaking shell structures in his hometown on the island of Rügen, in and around Rostock, and in other parts of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
The book oscillates between a classic architectural guide and an almost archaeological survey. It provides a thorough insight into the euphoric, progressive era in which these buildings were constructed in the 1960s and 1970s. For the first time, all the buildings in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are collected in one publication. The buildings are presented using current photos, plans, texts, and project information. Overview maps and address information facilitate on-site visits.
