The University of Miséricorde (1937–1941) is an idiosyncratic building whose ambivalent appearance, caught between tradition and modernity, is both fascinating and unsettling. The architect responsible, Denis Honegger (1907–1981), was aware of this tension and oversaw the planning and execution with great attention to detail. The design incorporated the architectural principles of his two mentors: the classicist Auguste Perret and the avant-gardist Le Corbusier.

Honegger's particular achievement lies in combining these contrasting positions into an independent architectural synthesis. The publication combines a reprint of the 1941 construction publication with new texts on the architecture and engineering work, as well as a picture section with current photographs. Plans, illustrations, and technical articles document the architecture, structural design, and innovative solutions in acoustics, lighting, building technology, and art in construction.
